So this is the last weekend update for Nutroll Month 2007. While I didn’t accomplish as much as I wanted to finish, I was more productive this month than I’ve been for all the other months of this year combined. The main point was having a goal to concentrate on while shaking off more of the cobwebs.
As I did on my board, I’m posting to larger versions of the character profile pictures. I really like how the face on Dr. Tamara Sakimoto turned out. She looks intelligent, kind and nothing like a superhuman in street clothes. Here’s the Mystery woman from the teaser page. I had to save this one from massive eraser burn and other things that messed up some linework. If it weren’t for that, I’d probably have 3 full color pics this week. That third full color pic probably would’ve been this one of ICI Director Richard Hauser. The suit needs some fixes, the face didn’t come out as I intended, but it’s good enough. Then again, the picture could’ve also been this one ofthis character who will probably appear on page three depending on whether or not I hear back from someone else on how the character looks. If I don’t hear back in time, I’ll roll with another character from the same location. She’s there to help flesh out a scene that reveals how much Nutroll loves the night life and got to boogie.
Nutroll month is just about over, but there’ll still be much more stuff with him coming in May. Believe it or not, that pic over there is from page 2. Right now, Chapter One looks like it’ll be about 9 pages and will (probably) end by almost explaining two of the most confusing panels of the Teaser page. I kept thinking that I’d made it too obvious, but no one has told me that they figured out where the mystery woman in blue is. Oh, well. The end of Chapter One should clean a bit of that all up.

Part one in a series of characters made in MK:Armageddon’s fun features called Kreate-A-Fighters (or Kreate-a-Kombatants as I keep accidentally calling it). I’ll eventually make this a feature on my ScrollBoss game site. Here’s Tyris Flare from Sega’s classic Golden Axe game.

She’s easy to make since, well, she’s just about nekkid. That’ll keep the parts costs down. The moves get pricey since you’ll want to give her all kinds of firey super moves. I’ve kept the regular moves out for now since that takes a goofy amount of time. Also, everyone has their own playing style, so just pick what suits you. Just make sure that she’s mostly kicky without a lot of flourish. I also didn’t list the face tweaks yet since they’re barely noticable.
If you use this to make a Tyris to use in an FAQ or net video, it’d be cool if you gave me a shout-out on it. Because, well, you didn’t. As long as you don’t claim that you came up with it yourself, I’m pretty much cool with it.

There’s a lot of excuses reasons why there was no Nutroll comic this weekend. The main reason was a “situation” that started on Monday, rolled on into Tuesday and hit the fan Wednesday. It wasn’t just the fact that I had to stop working on the art to try and keep things from coming to a head (heh, I failed at that) but the stress headaches that came along with it. I tried anyway, but everything came out looking crappier than usual. Believe it or not, something similar was going when I was trying to paste together layouts for the ashcan comic that would’ve had that Nutroll 5-page preview. That may have been eight years ago, but I remember that it’s the same kind of headache.
Then there’s what happened in the national news. Page one ended with the newscaster mentioning that the following footage would be disturbing. That would’ve been Nutroll being chased by men in familiar looking uniforms. These men eventually shoot Nutroll. A lot. This was always the plan because then scene shows both Nutroll’s powers, durability and attitude. I have two and a half of those three pages laid out. I had to keep redoing the first few panels for storytelling purposes. As I was doing that, I had the news on as background noise and I started getting a sense of general unease. It finally hit me on Thursday that maybe I should push that page back a week and do something else for the site. Then I started thinking about the discarded idea I had for this chapter one with a PhoneCam (or whatever) picture someone took of Nutroll in a dance club and that expanded into something completely different. That idea reminded me of a bit that was going to come later with the origin of Nutroll’s name. I figured that this would make for a better lead-in to the other stuff and bumped that in front. So now it’s going to be a news feature that talks about how various odd news stories (in the comic universe, of course) may be related to the weird video that aired on April 1st.
If there’s only bright spot in all of this, it’s that the story will probably be much better. I’m still very, very, very sorry that I didn’t have anything new for this week besides the update to Dr. Sakimoto’s profile and other small site fixes. Considering the news that I just heard in the middle of typing this post, I’m not sure how things are going to go this week. With what’s going on these days, we all need a good laugh.

It’s one thing to not get things done due to my own crazy. Eight times out of ten, I can find a way to work through it and get things done. On the other hand, I have a hard time trying to accomplish anything while dealing with O.P.D. What’s that? It means anything from Other People’s Drama, Other People’s Dickery and (most of all) Other People’s Dipshittery. Dammit, I have enough crazy on my plate as it is without other people spooning out more heaping helpings of Bug McNutty.
I’m not going to go into specifics, but due to a huge case of the above happening all of this and then completely blowing up about three hours ago, there may not be a new Nutroll page this week. To top it off, I’m kinda concerned about what happens on these pages and how bad it’s going to look if I post this stuff this week considering the current big news story. More on that later. Right now, I need to get some sleep.

Hung out with good friends this Saturday as a break from working on the book. We watched the 80’s video DVD that I bought (that one deserves it’s own post) then the “Masters of the Universe: best of seasons 1 and 2′ or whatever it’s called (and THAT deserves it’s own post). There was much laughter and moments of being disturbed from both. All in all, a great day, IMHO. Seeing as how Saturday is the only day of the week that I even leave the house for reasons other than work, We hit some of the usual places and I got some of the usual things.
Blue Beetle Companion by Christopher Irving – Hipped to this book by a great Newsarama.com article, I had my local comic book shop order this for me 2 weeks ago. I’m not even at the quarter way point (too busy workin’ on the site update) but I’m already in love with the book. As mentioned in the Newsarama feature, the hook isn’t just that it’s about Blue Beetle but how the people involved in creating him turn out to be many people that form the backbone of comic history itself. Will Eisner, Joe Simon, Jack Kirby, Robert Kanigher and just more, ‘What, him too?’ reactions than you can shake a stick at. A great book about a character who seems to have it all (even a radio show!) except for one thing: respect. If you see it at your local comic shop, give it a chance. Trust me, it deserves it. Christopher Irving definitely cooked up a great book here.
Knights Kingdom II: Rogue Knight Battle On the way back home, we stopped at K-Mart. Hoping to find some discounted Batdragster sets for spare parts, found an even better bargain of this set at $8. I found the latest round ro KK2 to be bland compared to the ill Scorpion logo enemies of the earlier sets, but this is some nice parts fodder. If they still have them, I may get another one (or two?) next week.
Rodney Dangerfield: I Don’t Get No Respect! Since I was going to check out at the less-crowded electronics desk, I browsed the DVDs in disappointment. On the way out of that isle, I catch the cover of the comedy CD and the price of $3. Well, I couldn’t pass that up. Haven’t heard that yet either (again with the site work) but I know I’ll be cracking up. I’m pretty sure I’ll be one of the only people on Earth with a comedy CD selection that has both Rodney Dangerfield and Robin Harris.

That Nutroll: Chronic Incubation pic is now in the main site gallery, the Nutroll gallery and in Wallpaper form.
I took the S-File character profile thing from my ScrollBoss site, streamlined it for Illmosis, and kicked it off with new profiles for Nutroll and Dr. Sakimoto. More characters will get the new character profiles after I finish the Illness: Chaper 1. Speaking of the Illness, the teaser is now fixed to be what I wanted it to be on the debut. Check it out again to refresh your memory!
I have the next two pages and a half roughed/plotted out and these ought to be fun. I may just debut them in black and white so I can bring you as much as I can as soon as I can. It’s an action scene which really shouldn’t be broken up even though it’s unintentionally laid out so that it can be posted page by page. I have to sketch out a good map of the location tonight so the action stays consistant so I can get at least one page done for this upcoming weekend. Plant you now, dig you later!

This is a better version of something that I drew for the Nutroll Comic. Just improved all around with much cleaner line work. Out of all the stuff that I’ve drawn for the comic, this pic easily rolled out of the pencil. Really, I’m not sure what that says about me. The fact that what’s probably the most bugged-out pic I’ve drawn in a long time combined with how natural it felt to draw… well… they’ll be slapping me in one of those straitjacket if I keep it up. After having to shrink, warp, skew and adjust smaller versions of screens to put inside the smaller screen, I’m ready for a nice padded cell. Anyway, there may be a wallpaper version of this one ready by the weekend.

So that page is done. Instead of going to the meeting with Director Hauser and the others in the ICI building, I’m using the news format as a crutch again. Oh, well. It’s giving me a much better way to introduce the individual characters. In fact, I’m intruducing characters that I hadn’t even made up until just then. Example: the news crawl at the bottom of the panels were to be a quick news story that took place between my character Passion Tanaka and… well… panels 2 and 3 kinda tell you who it was supposed to be. Then I started thinking, “Crap, could I get sued or something” and decided to change her name. Then just on the name I came up with a new character. Looks like Passion just got herself a new arch-enemy. Really, I think it’s all a symptom of the fact that I’m having too much fun with the news channel comic format. It’ll be hard to break away from it in chapter one, but that’s life. If only I didn’t suck as a writer.
Sadly, there won’t be a new page next week. I need to spend a week fixing up the Nutroll section of the website. I thought I’d have time during this update, but the rewrites killed all the time I’d spent on that and I had to move at ramming speed to come up with the new beginning. But there’ll be updates and modifications to the character profiles, links section and the new gallery section. Other random stuff will appear if I have the time. Until then, enjoy page 1… or not. The choice is yours!

First of all, thanks to anybody who checked out “the Illness” teaser. Different people have noticed different things about it and it’s good to see that certain elements have been figured out by a few people. I hope that the stuff in Chapter One will nudge people into looking at the teaser again to see what meant what.
This story is STILL writing itself and I’m on auto-pilot. The layouts in that pic over there would’ve been pages one and two if I didn’t change my mind last night and come up with a different page one. I’m drawing that now and MAY have that finished by Sunday. I’m afraid that it’ll only explain a bit of the preview, but will serve as a smoother transition to what happens in those layouts over there. It’s not wacky Nutroll action yet, but it’s going to add some texture to what’s revealed later.
I have no idea how much Nutroll stuff I’ll have done by this weekend, but I think I have this Friday off. If so, I’ll have much more time to work some crazy Nutroll magic for you. One idea is semi-spoileriffic to the story, but at least it’ll offset the rather boring page I’m working on that chock-full of snoozariffic story foundation.

It’s finally done. Well, done enough. “Nutroll: the Illness” was a rush job because I decided that this was the year that I’d do something cool with Nutroll on April 1st. the bad part is that I decided it only two weeks before it was due. I still didn’t have a story that felt like a good starting point for him or would introduce him in a way that’d mess with minds of others. Then, it just hit me at my night job and I couldn’t stop thinking of it. It was an idea that kept making other ideas which bred more whacked-out ideas. Those ideas called three friends who later called three friends. There’s a ton of stuff that changed while drawing it and even more changed while lettering it. I’ll talk about that mess later. Honestly, I’m too tired to talk about it. So just go and be confused by it.
